▸ [Israel-Palestine] UN council appoints panel to probe Israeli settlements in West Bank - Haaretz

The UN’s top human rights body has appointed three independent experts to conduct a fact-finding mission on how Israel’s West Bank settlements affect Palestinians.

The president of the UN Human Rights Council, Uruguay Ambassador Laura Dupuy Lasserre, on Friday named three women to the panel: Christine Chanet of France, Unity Dow of Botswana and Asma Jahangir of Pakistan.

Dupuy Lasserre said their mission will be to look how the Israeli settlements impact “the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people.”

The Geneva-based 47-nation council passed a resolution in March to establish such a probe.

The UN already considers Israeli settlements illegal under international law.

Some 500,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories Israel took control of during the Six-Day War in 1967, along with the Gaza Strip.

▸ Kenyan muslim clerics fault Obama on gay marriage, Daily Nation, Kenya

Kenyan Muslim leaders from the coast region have condemned President Barack Obama’s support of same sex marriages.

Speaking to the Nation in Mombasa, Council of Imams and Preachers Organising Secretary Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa accused President Obama of playing god by legalizing what “God Himself objects”.

“Simply because he has risen to be the President of a super power does not mean he can now start acting as God. He is nothing in the eyes of God and his plans will not succeed just like those who preceded him in such plans,” said Sheikh Khalifa.

He further accused the Kenya Human Rights Commission of propagating western values at the expense of religion by propagating for same sex marriages and abortion.

“God created man and woman so that we can procreate. How come we now want to behave worse than dogs who do not go for their own gender but know the difference between the two?” asked Sheikh Khalifa.

▸ Doha News: Qataris express concern about hiring 'beautiful' European maids

zikrayat:

dohanews:

Qatar has hit a new wrinkle in its search for manpower outside of the Asian countries it typically depends on - a growing fear that European maids will be too tempting for their employers.

Countries that Qatar usually sources its domestic labor, including the Philippines and Nepal,…

So….just….clean your own house?

There were concerns raised in Saudi Arabia about women/girls from Morocco as maid - along the same concern -

and then small controversy ensued, Saudi side decided to issue official papers or some kind of screening process for Moroccan women -

Something like that.

There are some BBS where Gulf male ppl talks quite frankly about their views on these issues tho (in English somehow).

And oh god, you don’t wanna know.

▸ Why Obama Should Go Slow in Syria - Leslie Gelb, Council On Foreign Relations, Daily Beast

Characteristically, the interventionists aren’t holding themselves to higher account; they’re blaming President Obama. To them, it’s all about his failure to act. But the president is moving sensibly and with due dispatch to restrain Assad’s killings. He’s squeezing the dictator economically and isolating him diplomatically. And while it doesn’t look like much, it is suppressing Assad’s freedom to slaughter. He has the military power to kill far more of his people. Meantime, President Obama is trying to fashion a coalition for more direct action—and it isn’t easy.

If that is true - that Obama is being careful about Syria with good understanding of how uncertain this conflict is, then I wish Hilary and Susan Rice also sound that they understand how cautious we all have to be regarding Syria.

Especially Hilary. She could have delivered explanation ‘why we have to proceed especially cautiously on Syria’  - to especially (‘regime change’ war drum banging) human rights type -

so that more of us would take a more cautious look at the uniqueness of the situation of Syria - and examine and discuss options more realistically.

(And she can still do that.)

1:05 a.m., 16 Dey/January 6 Iranian-born human rights activist and former Miss World Canada Nazanin Afshin-Jam has married Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay in a private ceremony held in Mexico. The bride, born in Tehran in 1979, the year of the Revolution, immigrated with her family to British Colombia two years later. The groom, a native of Nova Scotia, was the last leader of the Progressive Conservative Party before its 2003 merger with the Canadian Alliance that created today’s Conservative Party.

I think this PBS Frontline Tehran Bureau should run Tumblr. (Because they are really messy and strange and not really making sense …)

▸ Israel threatens to cut off power, water to Gaza | Occupied Palestine | فلسطين

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israel warned on Saturday that it would cut the supply of water and electricity to the Gaza Strip if rival Palestinian movements Fatah and Hamas form a unity government.

"The foreign ministry is examining the possibility of Israel pulling out of the Gaza Strip in terms of infrastructure," Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told the daily Yediot Aharonot website.

Don’t think there is time to pull pipes and cables in from Egypt side …

▸ Hamas armed wing ends truce with Israel

palestinianrefugeerevolution:

Announcement comes as Israel pounds Gaza for two days with retaliatory air strikes, killing at least 14 Palestinians.

(Video report found here)

The Qassam brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that they were no longer committed to its de facto ceasefire with Israel in effect since more than two years ago.

“There is no longer any truce with the enemy,” said the statement broadcast over a Hamas radio station early on Saturday.

Rockets have been launched from Gaza into Israel and Israeli aircraft have struck targets in the Palestinian territory in the back-and-forth aftermath of deadly attacks a day before in southern Israel.

(…)

Hamad called the rocket attacks from Gaza,”a kind of natural reaction against the Israeli aggression against our people.”

He continued: “If they stop their aggression and attacks against Gaza, I think people here are interested in keeping Gaza calm and quiet.”

Hamad also said that Hamas was “surprised” that members of the international community had not condemned Israel for “killing civilians”.
